Dancing, singing, speaking, staring, weeping, sleeping, scratching, getting ready to dodge a blow to the face. That covers everything except his parlor tricks. I'm not sure if I did the expressions correctly on some of the smaller ones, twas my first time drawing Stan, so by time I got to the last face I had his structure figured out. His laughter in "Way Out West" was what inspired the first picture (ie. him leaning on the table with his hand to his chest), after hiding the property deed inside his shirt, the woman dove in after it, and he first displayed fear of her getting in his shirt and about to get the deed, and then he begins to get relentlessly tickled by her (whether she meant to or not) while she tried to get the deed, and he is writhing on the bed with explosive laughter. His laughter is addictive to me, it gets me laughing as much as he is, and we both end up with sore stomachs from laughing so hard. Besides that, he is an all-around cute character and I enjoy the madness he causes and various facial expressions while Ollie is busy mugging for the camera.
combination of screenshots, photos, and paused videos. the beautiful words are directly from his tombstone. (ballpoint pen)
The laughing one is my favourite. They all look a great deal like him and capture his emotions/expressions nicely but wow, that laughing one is perfect.
I really like how you presented this with the different faces of Stan Laurel in this collage. Some are better than others, but together they tell a story. I especially like the sad / worried face in the background with the raincload. it really captures his face and his expression I so often remember him making everytime he'd do something wrong.
Though what's really fascinating about this piece is how the more I look at it, the more I see a gradual shift in emotion from face-to-face. Whether or not you did this on purpose, it is really quite ingenious. Here's what i see. in the foreground center, you have his happy-go-lucky face. then left of that (and going clockwise), he start breaking into a full-out laugh. then the next one (still going clockwise), he is still happy but more curious about something. Next one he is no longer happy but quite sad and worried. Then he has his hand on the shoulder of him with a very pensive, thoughtful state. Then the next one, with him standing, he is starting to smile again, but still in deep thought as he's contemplating something or just enjoying the environment around him, standing on his head of him completely relaxed and sleeping. Completing the circle, you have him up and awake, dancing and happy again and back into his happy-go-lucky face.
You literally transitioned into each stage of his emotions. with all but the exeption of maybe the sleeping one, none of these faces seem out of place of the flow you have inadvertently created. This is interesting for me because I always saw his many faces as being just random (although well-calculated). this shows how they all flow together to make up Stan Laurel.
I love the laughing scene in 'Way Out West.' He just laughs so hard and when the sherrif turns up he still carries on! God, I couldn't stop lauging with him.
I love the picture, this is without a doubt doing in my favs.
omg it leaves me shaking with giggles til around the the part when he lights his thumb on fire the first time and eats Ollie's hat. It makes Ollie falling the second time into the endless hole in the river even funnier since i was already pumped up with laughter. Oh man.. now I have to go watch it again!
